Fire ant stings: what to expect and what to do
Βασικά σημεία με μια ματιά

Fire ants bite to grip, then sting — often several times. The result is a burning welt that turns into a telltale white pustule. Here's how to handle it.

Fire ants are small but memorable. When disturbed, they swarm and each ant grips the skin with its jaws, then pivots to sting repeatedly. The immediate burning sensation gives them their name, and the reaction that follows is fairly distinctive.

What a fire ant sting looks like

Stings usually cause an instant burning or stinging pain, followed within hours by raised red welts. Over a day or so, many develop into a small, fluid-filled white pustule — a hallmark of fire ant stings. Because ants sting in groups, you often see several welts in a cluster or an arc.

First aid

  • Move away from the ants and gently brush any off your skin.
  • Wash the area with soap and water and apply a cold compress for the pain and swelling.
  • Leave the pustules intact — do not pop them, as broken skin can become infected.
  • Use over-the-counter anti-itch or pain relief as directed and try not to scratch.

Allergic reactions

Some people are allergic to fire ant venom. A large local reaction (extensive swelling around the site) is uncomfortable but not usually dangerous. A body-wide allergic reaction is different and can be life-threatening — see the warning signs below.

When to see a doctor

  • Any signs of a severe allergic reaction — trouble breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, dizziness, or a widespread rash — call your local emergency number immediately.
  • Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever after a few days.
  • A very large number of stings, or stings in someone with a known venom allergy.
  • Pustules that become increasingly painful or won't heal.
Bug Bite & Sting Identifier can help you tell a fire ant sting from look-alike bites — but a suspected allergic reaction is always an emergency. When in doubt, call for help.

FAQ

Should I pop the white pustule?

No. The pustule usually resolves on its own in a few days. Popping it breaks the skin and invites infection.

Why are there so many stings at once?

Fire ants swarm and sting as a group, and each ant can sting multiple times, so a single encounter often leaves several welts.
